When you see a corn bunting they look like a large scruffy sparrow with a black dot on their chest. They’re lazy birds, sitting back on their haunches when they perch on a fence – they don’t stand up straight like many birds so you can’t see their legs. When they fly they dangle their legs as if they’re not tied on properly – so when they try to land you end up wondering if they’ll just collapse.
I like the corn bunting because pictures of its song looks so precise and neat, as well as sounding beautiful. It’s like a babbling brook on a summer’s day, a dribble of silver. And the first time I hear it each summer it makes me smile and relax. It’s also the song that made me want to study animal behaviour. It’s also the first bird I ever studied when I was a student – you never forget your first love.
