• Question: Say you were in charge of a bird’s nest that the parents abandoned. What might you do to help the birds recognize their own species?

      That’s a really great question because baby birds look at the siblings in their nest and their parents to work out what they are and therefore who they should mate with when they’re adults (I’m a sparrow so I should find another sparrow to make with). If they’re raised with other nestlings that will help. Here’s a lovely article about how they manage this through some pretty weird costumes with whooping cranes
