I don’t get paid per se but I do have a scholarship which covers my living costs. After my PhD there is the opportunity to get funded post-doctoral positions or work on other research projects so yes I would then get paid for doing research. That is the dream really – get paid to do something you love!
Most university scientists get paid to do research and to teach – it’s one job with two parts. Research can cost money, like paying for travel or buying equipment to measure things (microphones and recorders to record bird song, for example) – if we need money like this then we apply for grant: we say what research we want to do, and why we think it is important. Not many people get the money though!
Doing research is a part of my job but most of it is teaching in the job I have at the moment. That means they’ll give me some paid time to do it but not very much (one week a year!). Sometimes I have to use my own time to get it done but it’s important to me so I do. Hopefully I’ll get more support to do research soon
I don’t get paid for my research at the moment. I’m paid to teach full time and I have to squeeze the research in where I can but if you really care about something you find a way!

Yes it is a career for me, so the pay helps me live. Sometimes, we get free meals for teaching students. haha
