I specialise in animal personality and how that affects how animals respond to things that stress them out. The two main things I look at are how they respond to pain when they get hurt or go to the vet for a procedure and how they respond when their environment is right and is causes them stress. I’ve studied dogs recovering from castration surgery and horses going into the vet with injuries. I’ve also looked at chickens, cats and horses in their home environment. Turn out, their personality affects how they respond really like human personality!

I have changed a bit over the years. My education was in Marine Biology but soon I realised I was more specifically interested in animal behaviour and ecology than other subjects. I also didn’t feel restricted to the marine environment and indeed ended up working with meerkats in the Kalahari Desert for 5 years. 🙂 These days I describe myself as a behavioural ecologist with a particular focus on social behaviour, so all sorts of interactions between two animals of the same species like mating behaviour, parental care, and competition.
