You might not want to know this! Wolf puppies lick the mouths of returning animals to get them to vomit up the food in their stomach which they then eat (they can’t do out on hunts yet and get to the food but they’re too old to rely on milk). This is the root of licking behaviour and you can notice that they focus on your face and if you’re really unlucky will get their tongue in your mouth (yum). So, it’s an important behaviour that starts in puppyhood but remains as a greeting in adult dogs.
