How many years does what take? If it is for university then I spent 3 years studying for an undergraduate degree in Animal Behaviour, then i spent 1 year studying for a masters in Endangered Species Recovery and Conservation. My PhD will take three to four years (i have 12 – 18 months remaining)

I probably speak from experience and from what I have seen among my students. To be an academic, we take 3-4 years to do our undergraduate at the university. Some take an extra year out to travel and/or figure out what they want to do. Then we have 1-2 years of Masters, some skip this phase and move to doing to a PhD which is about 3-4 years in the UK and on average 5 years in the US.

Once you are done with your PhD, working as a postdoc for 5-6 years would be a norm before one becomes more independent and establish your own research group. The journey is long, it seems but nevertheless very fun and fulfilling.

Like Ellen said – if you’re asking about Uni there are lots of degrees you can do which take different times:
Foundation degrees are 2 years and then you can do an extra 1 to get a full undergraduate degree. Not everywhere does those though but the place I work does them.
Normal undergraduate degrees are 3 years. After that you can do a Masters degree which is the first postgraduate degree there is and that takes 1 year. Finally, if you do the highest degree there is, you can do a PhD which takes 3 years but usually runs a little over. So, it takes about 7-8 years to become “Dr”

How long to be a scientist: If you include school which taught me the basics then 21 years! I didn’t discover animal behaviour science until nearly the end of my degree (when I was 21). So that makes 1 year of degree because after that I started my PhD (a doctorate in science). A PhD student is a junior scientist. After my Phd (4 years) I did 3 years more research as a fulltime scientist with no teaching. I became a lecturer (teacher and researcher) 3 years later.

How long does it take to do an experiment? it depends on the question. It usually takes a month or two to collect enough information to answer a simple question – the same if I’m working outside or indoors. The best things come to those who wait!
