      Generally only male birds sing. Female birds just give simple calls, like alarm calls. Male birds sing to defend their territory and attract a mate. In some species, like the rufous-and-white wren, both sexes sing – this is often when there is a lot of competition for really good territories: in these species the male and female “duet” to help defend the territory.
